Assembly & IRDA showed 50 participants how South Johor (Iskandar
Malaysia) is rejuvenated with forward economic planning, good
infrastructure and inclusive growth. The participants from Ngee Ann
Polytechnic & Republic Polytechnic learned about Economic
Transformation Program and lessons learnt so far by stakeholders.
ASSEMBLY is an open competition meant to introduce Youths to the concept of Systems Thinking through town planning. Town Planning is a delicate art of balancing interests, pushing for growth and lots more. Youths will be guided through processes of what makes a township liveable, what are the obstacles and challenges and finally, are given a chance to plan their own township. It is perhaps a slight formal version of popular online games like Cityville or Sim City.

Integrated approach vital in facing urbanisation challenges
KUALA LUMPUR: In recognising the complexities of urbanisation
challenges, government agencies, policymakers and industry players are
formulating a more integrated approach to address the components of
water, environment, waste and city planning solutions in a more holistic
way.
Given the urgent need for cities around the world to address pressing urbanisation challenges, many multinational companies that are involved in urban solutions, water and waste industries are also moving into this space to provide modern integrated solutions, which are expected to be a major growth sector in future.
“Among developing economies in East Asia and the Pacific, Indonesia is the most
urbanised at 54%, and over the past four decades it had the fastest annual rate of urbanisation, which is about 4.2%.
“The spatial structure of urban growth and development will critically shape the rate and quality of economic growth over the next 15 years and this structure will determine the quality of life for urban dwellers.
Focusing on green initiatives and sustainability in the domestic front, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) senior vice president Boyd Dionysius Joeman said IRDA must play its part in ensuring that Iskandar Malaysia development region in southern Johor is developed in a sensible, timely and sustainable manner. From the practitioner's perspective - field trips come alive
Teams who missed the first workshops in November had another shot at a seminar conducted at the premises of Raffles Institution Junior College. Teams from the Singapore Sports School, Raffles Institution JC and Raffles Girls Secondary braved the morning lecture session followed by an organised excursion in the afternoon. The big yellow coach that we hired had many vacant seats left. What a pity that many participants just couldn't join us that morning.
Those who missed the field trip missed a good thing! We visited the Land Transport Authority with its interactive gallery, the Marina Barrage and the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
Crowning off the day was the visit to JEM project office of Lend Lease. Sustainability Manager, Paul gave an inspiring and soul searching talk about what sustainability meant and how it is put into practice in their buildings , namely at 313@Somerset, recipient of BCA's Green Mark platinum award. The new upcoming JEM touted as Asia's biggest ever mixed-used retail mall in Jurong, aims at being sustainable and energy efficient.
We look forward to another discussion with Paul at 313@Somerset. Keep your eyes peel for another special workshop!
